November is the month when non-fiction and information books are celebrated nationally. In our school library there is a vast array of subjects to choose from for example cars, dinosaurs, drawing, baking and sport as well as many others. If you want to find out the answer to a question you have come and see if you can find a book to help you. Feed your curiosity. Alternatively investigate a new subject the possibilities are endless.

Year 3 are enjoying the books they have chosen from the junior library. They have discovered many interesting fiction books as well as fascinating information ones.

Jill Tomlinson

Welcome back to school for the new academic year. Our new author of the term is Jill Tomlinson.
She was born in 1931 and did not intend to becoma a writer, in fact she trained as an opera singer. Whilst her voice was maturing she decided to have a family. However she did not manage to return to singing as she became ill and was forced to look for something else to do. She decided to begin a journalism course and by the third lesson had changed her mind again and focussed on writing for children. Jill soon found that it was not easy to persuade publishers to print her first story, The Bus Who Went To Church, but at her 17th attempt she did manage to persuade a compnay to do it. She loved animals and subsequently wrote many stories about them. Arguably her most famous book is The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark. Jill loved reading her stories to children and would quite often visit her local primary school to read to them. She was bubbly, caring and funny children loved her.
Unfortunately she suffered from multi sclerosis and died suddenly in 1976. Over 40 years after her death the books are still well loved, classic stories and continue to be read today.

Animal Agents

As the school year comes to an end please bear in mind that children can take part in the summer reading challenge which is being held in all libraries across the borough. This year's theme is 'whodunnit'. A crime has been committed in the library, there are various suspects and the animal detectives have been called to solve it. As children read six books, of their choice, and collect stickers the culprit will become clear to them. Each child that completes the challenge will receive a gold medal and a certificate in the autumn term.
Havering had the highest completion rate of all london boroughs in 2016 at a very impressive 79%. Hopefully we will be able to continue this success and committment to reading.
This is a fun, free activity for children to take part in during the school holiday and also helps to keep up their reading ready for their return in September.

Competition

I am pleased to annouce that the winner of the letter writing competition is Molly Joyce. She imagined that she was an evacuee called Hannah and wrote a letter home to her Mum. She has won a copy of JacquelienWilson's new book 'Wave Me Goodbye' and her entry will be sent forward to the national competition. Good luck Molly.

Library Books

The end of the school year is rapidly approaching, all library books need to be returned next week. A list has been given to each class teacher if you are unsure what book you have or alternatively come into the library to see me. Unfortunately if a book has been lost a contribution of £2.50 will need to be paid into your Squid account help meet the cost of a replacement. No further books will be loaned before the end of term.
